Despite sales figures from PCs are further going down in Western Europe the turnover of the main distributors increases. According to the market research institute Context the main reason for this is the significant increase of tablet sales which increased in the first half of 2013 by 137%!
Tablet sales are mainly driven by Android devices. The market share of Android tablets increased from 25.1% (first half of 2012) to 61.2% within the first half of 2013. In comparison to this the sales figures of devices with Apple’s iOS dropped from 71.2% to 37.2% for the same periods. The country with the highest increase of tablet sales was Great Britain with unbelievable 389%. In Austria the increase was 298.5%, in Switzerland 45.2%, in France 153.4% and in Germany 86.7%.
Sales figures from PCs significantly dropped by another 12.6% within the first half of 2013. In detail 8% less PCs, 6.2% less notebooks and 75.6% less Netbooks were sold. In Austria 18% less PCs were sold. The only country were the PC sales increased was Great Britain where 3.3% more PCs were sold than in 2012.
Due to difficult economic conditions IT investments are kept very low. Many companies just upgraded now to Windows7. Windows8 is rarely used. Only 20% of devices sold within the first half of 2013 contained Windows8.
