IDC Market research institute lowers 2014 sales numbers for tablets

IDC expects a much lower growth of sales numbers for tablets than originally expected. Starting from a forecast of 261 million pieces the new forecast for 2014 is now 245 million pieces. This corresponds to an increase of 12% in comparison to last year, and is much lower than the increase of 2013 which was 52%.

As reasons IDC states that tablets are much longer in use than expected, and when buying a new one the old ones are usually passed to other family members. Another main reason is the high interest of customers in smartphones with huge displays. In 2013 the share of so called “Phablets” with 5,5″ screens has doubled (10.5%).
