NASA rover curiosity sent at the beginning of 2017 “a good new year” to all his fans on twitter. During X-mas he was alone, but he sent a message “I do not feel lonely”. During the holidays when he had some troubles with his drill he informed all via twitter: “I am fine, do not worry about me. I’m already driving gain.”
Curiosity is not only scientific but also a marketing success for NASA. The idea to sent messages over twitter is brilliant and enables more than 3.6 million people from all over the world to follow the scientific experiments. It brings research under common people and informs continuously how the tax money is used. Curiosity has also 100.000 fans on Instagram and 1.3 million on facebook, where he introduced himself: “what has 6 wheels and is now on the red planet? That’s me 🙂 ”
The 900 kg robot which has the size of a small car regularly twitters smart and funny messages. This chat module was developed by a quite famous social media development team from the JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratory) which has already won several prizes for their work.
This is an excellent example how NASA follows its education assignment by using popular chat channels in order to bring scientific research closer to the people and to make complex scientific programs understandable by the general public. In the last three years Curiosity managed to quadruple his fans.
